Many of you may not have heard about WordPress, let alone WordCamp. Worry not. You have come to the right place to learn about it. Here’s a brief introduction to WordPress, WordCamp and why you should attend it.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a web software you can use to create beautiful websites, blogs or apps. It was started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing and with fewer users than you can count on your fingers and toes. Since then, it has grown to be the largest online, self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used by millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day. It is also an open source project, which means there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. And to add cherry on top of the cake, it is absolutely free. The official WordPress site likes to say “WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time”. They can’t be any righter.

Who uses WordPress?

Anyone basically. In today’s internet-run world, everyone is looking to advertise themselves on the internet. Starting a website is the first and foremost step to achieving that. And a website should be elegant, clean, well-organized and have all the necessary options and links that a potential client seeks to know about you or your business. That is when you come to WordPress. Even if you are a complete noob at all this tech stuff, you won’t have to worry one bit. WordPress is probably the easiest blogging and content management system in existence. And even then if you feel like “Ugh, I just can’t”. Still, you don’t have to worry. As of 2012, it powers almost 72.4 million sites in the world and WordPress.com hosts about half of them. There are thousands of WordPress developers who can take care of the dirty work so that you can focus on what you do best. If you have a vision, they can certainly build it for you. If you are ever curious about who uses WordPress, head on over to the WordPress site showcase and you’ll be impressed by the number of well-known sites and people use WordPress to power their websites.

What is WordCamp?

WordPress has a community of people who share their passion for WordPress. Every year and in almost every continent of the world, conferences are organized centered around WordPress. The local community of a country organizes this event. And this informal, yearly community-organized conference is called a WordCamp. It is nothing big or fancy. It is a low-key affair for WordPress users that allows them to meet, share and learn WordPress together. All content is focused on using or developing WordPress. Issues around blogging, business and social media that are related to WordPress use may also be included.

Benefits of Attending a WordCamp

  • Fun and interactive learning
  • Meet new friends, potential business partners, employees, employers or even life partners
  • Become a part of a warm and inviting community

With carrying this goal of providing the Nepali WordPress a common platform and join the growing global community of WordPress, we are organizing the first edition of WordCamp Nepal and aptly naming it “WordCamp Nepal 2012”.

If it grows, it will provide a viable career option for many young Nepalis, and help us reap the benefits of a global economy.
